forever parked Eastern Dance and dark dance company
This article I wrote for the Web Gothoriental Dream Festival to be held from 26 to 31 July in Barcelona.
Oriental dance is considered a dance that is lost in the history of humanity, especially in the Middle East. It is a dance of ancient reminiscences.
The taste for oriental dance in the West is largely due to the taste for Orientalism in the late nineteenth century. Famous figures such as Mata Hari, Isadora Duncan or Tortola Valencia sounded until the early twentieth century, but it was not until the mid-twentieth century that belly dancing began to penetrate, in various shapes and tastes in the West, from America to Russia. Could represent a mysterious dance, sensual or even erotic, but the truth is that has always attracted all kinds of people, especially women by their movements and symbols.
Oriental dance, as we dream, or belly dancing, actually derives various dances from North Africa, Near and Middle East to India, and the resulting mergers and upgrades, and has not always shown a dance of joy. Like any dance, can help convey other emotions, even the darkest of human beings or sad, longing, fear, betrayal, ...
The use of oriental dances to represent a wide range of human emotions and universal is almost as long as the same oriental dance, oriental dance and Egyptian, and not just talking about the ritual dances.
During their penetration of the western public, and the light and medium acculturation western "part of the Arab countries, belly dancing turned to less traditional models, and gradually introduced mergers between them oriental dances, or other dances of the Far East or the world (African dance, samba, Polynesian dances, ballet ...). Also begun an experiment with their own concepts of contemporary dance.
therefore not surprising that in the margins of Western society in a society Conjuntura launching a process of creating alternative movements and trends, or even urban tribes, towards the end of the twentieth century, oriental dance being affected.
The Gothic, a movement born around the 80s and inspired by Romanticism, with a small base in the breakaway punk and somewhat critical of society, found in the Oriental dance form of expression suitable, sinuous dances, sensual, exotic, mysterious, ancient, symbolic, and could supply some of the expressions of this movement.
As Tempest said (a dancer emblematic of this dance): "A goths like shiny things, elaborate costumes, passionate music, and dramatic. At Eastern dancers will Shiny Things, elaborate costumes, passionate music, and dramatic. Sooner or later the two camps had to match ... "
Thus, at a time and place not very well defined, originated what has been called raqs gothique, which is an" Asian fusion "between dance Eastern and conversion movements and attitudes of the Gothic, which was gradually picking up especially in the U.S., Germany and the UK a special weight.
In the late 90s there was a new situation, is that traditional standards belly dance or Oriental dance began to "break" to evolve in new ways. New mergers, concepts, and even new styles like American tribal and tribal fusion. The first intended to return to the state "tribal" of Oriental dance with their groups, their strong women's movement, improvisation, costume loaded and ethnic music purist.
The latter appeared to be the most broken one, fusing American tribal dances not only with other but with the new trends alternatives, in addition to the gothic, cyberpunk, industrial, ... It was a dance that already seemed very mystical, ritual, strong, and quickly attracted to the Gothic, creating the tribal goth and dark tribal . Although
Gothic socially seen as a tendency to aggressive, or marginalized as many other alternative trends in dance has represented a new path of evolution and understanding. That is why many practitioners and dancers have gone into these styles to broaden their skills and their understanding of dance and the connection to the feeling.
is a dance technique that not only claims, or to dress in black, but also the feeling in action and expression, feel the forces being represented, as the Gothic is dramatic, epic and romantic.
